You may well be aware of the recent series ‘Adolescence’ on the streaming platform Netflix. This is a 4 part series that focuses on important contemporary themes including violence, toxic masculinity, the ‘manosphere’ and children’s mental health to name a few. The series has initiated a great deal of discussion in the media regarding how to tackle these issues. The series itself poses questions as to accountability and responsibility for the radicalisation of young people. With the rise of social media, grooming and radicalisation the series poses the question of how young people are no longer safe in their own bedrooms as they interact with the online and digital world.
At Kings Monkton our pupils are encouraged to think critically about the media and representation, including being mindful and aware of the dangers of being online. As a school we take opportunities to raise awareness of radicalisation and the dangers of online groups in pastoral time and assemblies. We have an ‘all to tackle’ philosophy on misogyny. Within our PSE curriculum there is a focus on ensuring our pupils identify risks and are safe from harm.
Topics at Key Stage 3 include:
- Y7 Diversity, Prejudice and Bullying Self-worth, romance and friendships (including online) and relationship boundaries
- Y8 Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing as well as relationship values, online safety and media reliability
- Y9 pupils explore peer influence, respectful relationships, the portrayal of relationships in the media and the dangers of online, and addressing abuse.
- Within Key Stage 4 and 5 pupils examine relationship expectations and challenges, the impact of the media on relationships, relationships onscreen Safety in Relationships.
- These messages are introduced within our primary curriculum also with the emphasis on positive relationships, respect, valuing diversity and recognising inappropriate behaviour both in person and online. We have signposted trusted adults and how to ask for help should they need it.
Further details of the curriculum can be found in the overview sheets for PSE.
‘Adolescence’ serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges today’s youth face, especially concerning online influences and mental health. As parents, staying informed and maintaining open communication with your children are vital steps in safeguarding their wellbeing in an increasingly digital world.
